-The San Diego Union Tribune -Authorities worry about increased hate crimes -The article that I read today was about hate crimes. They have increased. It says that the first of three brutal attacks occurred at a roadside bar called Don’s cocktail lounge off the highway 8 business route. A white man with a swastika tattooed on his chest sucker-punched a black man who had stepped outside to have a cigarette. The victim who suffered severe brain damage can barely speak now. About a month after the July 7 attack a pair of skinheads beat up two black men one of them a marine at a gas station. A week later two skin heads attacked a Latino laborer outside a liquor store. All three assaults happened in Lakeside, a rural community about 20 miles east of San Diego that has tried to shake its reputation as a haven for hate. Investigators are uncertain if the beatings were related. The only thing that they are sure about is that they were meant to send a message: “be afraid. Were there and were going to come after you.” -I think that this article is interesting. I think that police should severely punish these people. I think that it is pretty stupid that people are acting like this especially if the victims did not do anything bad to them. -One interesting thing that I learned is that in San Diego county there is 51% white residents and 49 % minorities. And that in El Cajon-Lakeside-Santee there is 71% white residents and 29% minorities. No wonder these things are happening over there.
+ San Diego Union Tribune + This morning I read about the scorching temperatures San Diego has had all Labor Day weekend long. It was muggy and all-out miserable all weekeend with temperatures that hit triple digits in all of San Diego County. What made matters worse was that thousands of homes lost power and could not even turn on the air conditioner. The National Weather says that the hot ,humid weather will continue until later this week. Jennifer Chase of the National Weather Service says that this weather is not usual for Labor Day weekend. National Weather Service also says that Monday will be the highest temperatures of the week. Along with the heat, unstable weather caused by monsoonal moisture from the south prompted concerns of thunderstorm throughout Southern California. Flash-flood warnings were issued for those in the San Diego, San Bernardino, & Riverside counties. San Diego county had 34 separate power outages, but most of them were in the East county. + Interesting Fact: 22,000 homes around San Diego county lost power. + Reflection: I am so grateful that my air condition was wprking perfectly and I spent most of the time at the beach anyways. =)
32 ARRESTED iN MAj0R RAiD 0N WARRiNG iTALiAN M0BS.
In Rome, Italian police arrested 32 people during a major raid. Warring crime families were in the middle of a deadly fued. The arrests were linked to the shooting of six men outside a pizzeria in Germany. Of the 32 arrested, 3 were hiding in bunks to prevent from being arrested and being shot dead. The arrests were the result of a long-running investigation into the 'Ndrangheta crime group, which are known as more powerful and active than the Sicilian Mafia. The killing of Six men in the Pelle-Romano family, it was known that it was revenge for the death of Giovanni Nirtas wife. Strangio-Nirta Clan and Pelle-Romano family have been fueding on and off since 1991 after an egg-throwing incident.
I think its stupid how they could hate each other so much after an egg issue. If eggs were thrown at me that made me angry, i'd get them back with eggs and call it even. If there was to be a fight, i'd fight and let it be done with. I would never expect it to come out with death.
Title: San Diego Union Tribune Today I read about the “Cold Wars” and at least 4,000 people died as a result of nuclear projects during the Cold Wars. 36,500 people became ill with radiation related diseases. The news said Friday that it collected the numbers by examining records from federal projects involving uranium, including building and testing bombs, but did not include people who had never filed claims or had claims rejected. People who mined Uranium, built bombs or inhaled dust from bomb tests were included in the tally. Beginning in 1945, 70,000 atomic bombs were built. About 15,000 workers made plutonium triggers at Rocky Flats. Of the 36,500 who became ill, about 15,000 were involved in the manufacture of bombs, the radiation they were exposed to took years to effect them. Some of them may have died as a result of their work, but were not listed among project deaths by the government. Hundreds of thousands of people including soldiers were exposed to radiation from nuclear tests. Although many of those exposed were not warned about the danger lawsuits have been documented showing that government officials are aware, officials first admitted the problem in the 1980s.
The first of three brutal attacks occurred at a roadside bar called Don’s Cocktail Lounge off the highway 8 route. A white guy with a swastika tattooed on his chest sucker-punched a black man who had stepped outside to have a cigarette. The victim can barely speak now due to brain damage. This happened July 7th, but about a month later, a pair of skinheads beat up two black men, one being a Marine, at a gas station. One week later, two skinheads attacked a Latino laborer outside of a liquor store. All three assaults happened in Lakeside. This community has tried for years to get rid of its hate crime reputation. Police don’t know if the attacks were related, but they do know that this is a growing problem throughout East County.
I think this is an issue that needs to be resolved but it will take time. Not everybody in that community is racist so it will be hard to contain. I think that this is a widely spread problem throughout East County.
Bum, San Diego’s 19th century town dog, provides commentary on exhibits at the museum of San Diego history in Balboa Park. He will also get top honors next month at the unveiling of a long awaited, life sized bronze statue in the Gaslamp quarter. This even will unite him with a previously donated statue of the Greyfairs Bobby, by the 1800s town dog of Edinburgh, Scotland, San Diego’s sister city. A copy of the bum statue is scheduled to be installed near the original Bobby statue in the Scottish capital next summer. The additions of the statues sitting side by side in both San Diego and Edinburgh will add an exciting, historical and cultural element to both cities.
I think that this is pretty nice for the little town dog because i guess he was really known around san diego. Even though it was a long time ago this statue entertains young youth and is like a little thing to remind us of our little san diego town puppy. I dont know why he was famous like this but it is really nice to actually make a 300 pound statue of a town dog.
Arizona Sculptor, Jessica McCain's 300 pound bronze statue of Bum, San Diegos town dog will be installed in a gaslamp quarter park in october.

Military burn unit filled with pain, hope, humor. San Antonio- five badly burned soldiers arrived around 11 pm. Sedated and wrapped in bandages form head to toe. The man had been injured days earlier when a roadside bomb turned their Bradley fighting vehicle into an inferno. A man who escaped run back to help a trapped comrade. They examined the man who escaped and realized that his lungs were terrible. They looked as if he had smoked around 100 packs of cigarettes in 10 minutes. Then they thought if he managed to escape and that is what his lungs look like imagine the men who were trapped in there. One of the soldiers went into shock. His heart, lungs and kidneys failed. He died without regaining consciousness. The soldier who had escaped had rebounding then an infection set in and he died. Within three weeks four of the soldier had died. The only man that survived had 97% of his body burned. He spent nearly 17 months in the hospital. He had more than 40 surgeries. He is still recovering. I think that every military man and women are very brave. I think that they deserve a brake because I really don’t see what is changing.

AUTHORITIES WORRY ABOUT INCREASED HATE CRIMES
