SHIPS ARE TOP PORT POLLUTERS

Nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxide and particle emissions last year were discovered in the first inventory of air pollution. The Unified Port of San Diego shows that oceangoing vessels have accounted for most of these air pollutants. Ships produce a larger amount of green house gases, contributing to global warming, which in the long run, becomes the cause. The study to find out these statistics cost $120,000, which was done on Wednesday. A community advisory group was held to shape a clean-air plan by 2008. The port district’s environmental manager said that now that people have looked at the inventory, they can find a way to minimize this situation. 29% of California residents see air pollution as the state’s most important environmental problem, said a recent survey. A separate study said by 2012, ships and commercial boats will be the top source of nitrogen oxide pollution.

I think that there should be boats that are hybrid to be invented. If that were to happen, this problem will slowly be solved. I think that this is a never ending problem because people all over the country use boats and ships daily as their job to work and even to live.

A shore-power project would cost $50 million to go through with.

Deformed frogs, were are they coming from?

Biologist have veirfed that a sequence of parasites cause deformities in frogs but what we just found out is that the parasite are coming from farms and ranches were the runoff to water leads to either farms or lakes. Nutrient pollution is common in mosquitoes because they adapt to the virus malaria. Since 1995 were a pond full of deformed frogs were found the frequency of deformed frogs are steadily increases. The simply parasite is small worm that eats up any tissue that is extended from the body, this parasite has extended from snails, birds, and now frog. I think these study are showing what could happen to humans if we don’t start being more careful with agricultural production. The parasite has better itself in host so who says were not next for the parasite.

- The san Diego union tribune
- Vanishing ice worries west
- The article that I read today was about the artic ice. It says that accelerating artic melting could change weather patterns in region, it could bring in less rain. Even though the artic ocean is more than 3000 miles from southern California, the rapid disappearance of sea ice at the top of the world could be altering weather patterns down here. Three years ago computer forecasts models predicted that in 2050, the reduced ice mass would cause climate shifts that would result in a drought in the western US. But the ice is melting far faster than climatologists thought it would. The artic now looks how they thought it would in 2050. it is as if the atmosphere hit the fast forward button.
- I think that this article is pretty scary. I wonder if all the ice in the artic will eventually melt. And if it does I wonder what will happen to the world will it like flood or something.
- One interesting thing that I learned is that now there is only 1.59 million area that is covered by ice.

Study ties deformed frogs to runoff from agriculture
There has been new observations were frogs were seen with deformities. These frogs are said to have six legs or an extra hip. The deformity is said to be caused by nutrient-rich overflows from farms and ranches. Discovery from some biologist of University of Colorado Pieter Johnson and his colleagues verified that nutrient pollution, agriculture overflow rich in nitrogen and phosphorous has set off biological chain reaction in ponds and lakes. This overflow has been the cause of the deformity beginning with algae and later affecting frogs causing them unable to hop. This has been the first study that indicates, nutrient improvement produces a wide variation of trematode parasites an distortion effecting young frogs, causing severe deformities. The population of these parasites are increasing without any explanation of what the is cause. Study that these biologist have made also prove how human-caused environment change can make it much easier for harmful parasites to survive. Nutrient pollution has been found in some Belize waterways near gulf in Honduras contain mosquito species that carry malaria, an infectious passed by bite of infected causing chills, fever, & sweating. The water now enrich with nutrients around the world restrain organisms causing cholera, infectious mostly fatal epidemic disease caused by water causing diarrhea, vomiting, & cramps, algal blooms, & swimmer’s itch. One important fact I discovered form this article was that in 1995 school kids from Minnesota found a pond full of extraordinarily deformed frogs. These creatures have increased in population across the country especially in Midwest and the Pacific Northwest. I think they should take care of this situation before it becomes much worse. But I really don’t understand why they do so many human-creating things like producing something to make it better to try and simplify the conditions but really what they do doesn’t really help maybe for a bit but there's always a defect to it. THEY SHOULD JUST Simply LEAVE THINGS HOW THEY ARE AND LET NATURE HANDLE IT!!!!! Sequence of miss happening are occurring that need to be dealt with.

Today I read about Harvard archaeologists have extracted usable DNA from long dried spit wads that were the prehistoric equivalent of chewing gum. Employing methods now common at modern-day crime scenes, they also managed to gather and analyze DNA from 2,000 year old bloodstained garments. They said that this the first time we’ve actually gotten human DNA from an ancient artifact. The work aimed mainly to show that such DNA analysis of old artifacts is possible, but it also yielded a strong hint of an answer to an archaeological question. The specific DNA patterns found on artifacts of a corn growing culture known as the Western Basket makers suggest that they migrated from central Mexico and brought farming with them. They appeared less likely to be indigenous Southwestern residents who picked up farming on their own turf. DNA has been gathered for years from ancient human skeletons, and occasionally from coprolites, fossilized feces. Researcher have even reported gleaning sequences of DNA from 45,000 year old Neanderthal skeletal remains. One of the scientists proposed gathering DNA not from bone but from the traces of saliva left on 2,000 year old “quids,” chunks of chewed up leaves and from “aprons” thong like garmets worn by women and found with what is believed to be menstrual blood

sunny daygo union tribune ♥.

a few facts and figures for child health care bill ♥.

This morning I read an article on the Congress' proposal to expand a child care program gives states the financial incentive to cap eligibility. If it's passed it will have coverage to families of four earning about $60,000 a year. What makes this whole thing exciting is the fact that it's a figure that seldom emerges in the claims and counter-claims being tossed around. People are getting mad because the Bush administration and many of the Republicans are completely against it. To simplify the claim, it would encourage families to substitute public insurance for private insurance. But to verify if this applies to you, you must first apply and you will go through a sequence of interviews in order to qualify.

interesting fact ♥.
The Congressional Budget Office projects that about 3.8 million people would become insured as a result of the bill.

Today I have read an article in the Union Tribune called: More Mount Soledad homes appear to be at risk. First of all I think that this landslide was a very terrible thing but I am glad that everyone in that area survived. They are now urging home owners to leave because they fear that there will be another landslide on the other side of the mountain. The attorneys representing several homeowners accused the city of interfering with their court approved efforts to gather data on Wednesdays slide. Seven homes were damaged and 111 households were evacuated. City officials have denied everything and said that they will cooperate with the homeowners. The governor declared a state of emergency yesterday. This is clearing the way for state and federal funding for the reconstruction of Soledad Mountain road. Today, six homes remain red tagged and city officials think they will be unsafe for occupancy for at least several weeks. Ten homes around that area are yellow tagged. This means that residents can retrieve belongings but can not stay overnight. Five other homes are habitable but are not able to get in because of the dirt blocking the entrances. I think that this is terrible but everything will be ok and they should be happy no one got hurt.
